Guru-stotram गुरुस्तोत्रम् - Verse 2

Verse 2

अज्ञानतिमिरान्धस्य ज्ञानाञ्जनशलाकया।

चक्षुरुन्मीलितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥२॥

ajñānatimirāndhasya jñānāñjanaśalākayā|

cakṣurunmīlitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ||2||

[अन्वयः]

अज्ञान-तिमिर-अन्धस्य ^6/1 चक्षुः ^1/1 ज्ञान-अञ्जन-शलाकया ^3/1 येन ^3/1 उन्मीलितम् ^1/1 (भवति), तस्मै ^4/1 श्री-गुरवे ^4/1 नमः ⁰ (अस्तु)॥

The eye of the blind by the darkness of ignorance is opened

by whom, with the instrument with ointment of knowledge,

my salutations to that Śrī Guru.

§  अज्ञान-तिमिर-अन्धस्य ^m/6/1 =  the blind by the darkness of ignorance = in सम्बन्धे षष्ठी to चक्षुः

o   अज्ञानम् (ignorance) एव तिमिरः (darkness) अज्ञान-तिमिरः (KT), अज्ञान-तिमिरेण अन्धः (one who is devoid of sight) अज्ञान-तिमिर-अन्धः (3T by 2.1.30 तृतीया तत्कृतार्थेन गुणवचनेन।, 3^rd case ending word is compounded with another word denoting an attribute caused by that word), तस्य।

§  ज्ञान-अञ्जन-शलाकया ^f/3/1 = with the instrument with ointment of knowledge = in करणे तृतीया to उन्मीलितम्

o   ज्ञानम् एव अञ्जनम् (magical ointment) ज्ञानाञ्जनम् (KT), ज्ञानाञ्जन-लिप्ता (applied with the ointment of knowledge) शलाका (instrumental stick) ज्ञानाञ्जन-शलाका (मध्यमपदलोपी KT), तया।,

§  चक्षुः ^n/1/1 =  an eye, in कर्तरि प्रथमा to (भवति)

§  उन्मीलितम् ^n/1/1 = opened

o   (उद् + मील्च् (1P) to close) to open + क्त (कर्मणि)

§  येन ^m/3/1 = by whom = corresponding to तस्मै श्रीगुरवे; in कर्तरि तृतीया to उन्मीलितम्

gurustotram

अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम् ।

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥१॥

akhaṇḍamaṇḍalākāraṃ vyāptaṃ yena carācaram |

tatpadaṃ darśitaṃ yena tasmai śrīgurave namaḥ||1||

[अन्वयः]

अखण्ड-मण्डल-आकारम् ^1/1 चर-अचरम् ^1/1 येन ^3/1 व्याप्तम् ^1/1 (भवति),

येन ^3/1 तत् ^1/1 पदम् ^1/1 दर्शितम् ^1/1 (भवति), तस्मै ^4/1 श्री-गुरवे ^4/1 नमः ⁰ (अस्तु)॥

The one whose form is the entire universe, which consists of all mobile and immobile, is pervaded by which (Brahman),

by whom that goal (Brahman) is shown,

my salutations to that Śrī Guru.

§  अखण्ड-मण्डल-आकारम् ^n/1/1 = the one whose form is the entire universe = adjective to “चराचरम्”

o   अखण्डम् (whole, unbroken) एव मण्डलम् (universe) अखण्डमण्डलम् (KT), अखण्डमण्डलम् आकारः (form) यस्य तत् अखण्डमण्डलाकारम् (116B)।

§  व्याप्तम् ^n/1/1 = pervaded

o   वि + आप् to pervade + क्त (कर्मणि) = व्याप्त

§  येन ^n/3/1 = by which (Brahman) = corresponding to “तत् पदम्”, in कर्तरि तृतीया to व्याप्तम्

§  चर-अचरम् ^n/1/1 = that which consists all mobile and immobile

o   चरः (one who moves) च अचरः (one who does not move) च, तयोः समाहारः (aggregation of them) चराचरम् (SD)।

§  तत् ^n/1/1 = that (Brahman)

§  पदम् ^n/1/1 = goal

o   पद्यते इति पदम् । that which is reached, gained.

§  दर्शितम् ^n/1/1 = shown = complement to पदम्

o   (दृश् (1P) to see + णिच् (causative)) to show + क्त (कर्मणि)

§  येन ^m/3/1 = by whom = corresponding to तस्मै श्रीगुरवे; in कर्तरि तृतीया to दर्शितम्

§  तस्मै ^m/4/1 = unto him

§  श्री-गुरवे ^m/4/1 = the teacher with all glories = in उपपद-चतुर्थी to नमः

o   श्रीयुक्तः गुरुः श्रीगुरुः (मध्यमपदलोपी KT), तस्मै ।

§  नमः ⁰ = salutation
